Basics of PivotTables
(Spec Spot)

Using screen recording and audio capture technology, I delivered a mock virtual workshop by setting up a PivotTable in Excel. I did not use a script, and instead ad-libbed my narration from bullet points to simulate the “live” nature of this scenario. I also designed an accompanying workbook with solutions that so learners can practice what they’ve learned.

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s become more important than ever to deliver training in an online environment. When designing this project, I wanted to accomplish the following goals:

  • Explain what a PivotTable is and why you would want to use one in a way that anyone can understand, even Excel beginners

  • Show the process in as straightforward and clear a way as possible

  • Avoid leaving things Excel does automatically unexplained, such as the Recommended PivotTables option or the Values section

  • Provide opportunities for learners to practice with plausible scenarios

Tools Used: Microsoft Excel, Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) for screen and audio recording, Adobe Premiere for video editing
