Hand Hygiene Best Practices
(Spec Spot)

In a post-COVID-19 world, proper hand hygiene has been key to employee training, especially for those in the hospitality and retail industry. Using my phone camera, audio capture technology, and video editing software, I created a quick video to outline the key steps to proper hand hygiene as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). While WHO already has a very good video outlining the steps on their YouTube channel, several adjustments need to be made to make it fully suitable for professional workplace training. Specifically, the steps need to be explicitly stated and shown prominently in the video so employees clearly know all the distinct steps they need to follow. This also makes it easier for trainers to evaluate proper hand hygiene because the steps are clearly outlined. Some steps would also benefit from different camera angles and distances to make them clearer for the learner.

When designing this project, I wanted to accomplish the following goals:

  • The importance of following all the steps are clearly outlined in the beginning of the video so learners are more invested in retaining this information

  • Each step is distinctly identified using text on the screen

  • Multiple angles must be taken to shown certain steps more clearly: because I only have one camera, I must perform the each step in the same way, but with the camera in a different location

  • Where appropriate, zoom-ins and pauses should be used to convey the key aspects of certain steps

  • An accompanying form must be created from this video for a trainer or manager to ensure the learner can practice all ten steps of proper hand hygiene
